People often talk about the choice in life you have to make between following your heart or your head. Growing up we are conditioned by the education system to become good at following rules, memorising facts and turning up.
We are rewarded by compliance not imagination. As Seth Godin would say we are cogs being produced for the industrial machine, he argues we are all artists and we dull the pain of the artist in exchange for the pain of compliance.
Recently I have been working really hard to put passion at the centre of everything I do. The festival I recently co-founded Vegan Futures ended with 130 people on the ticket waiting list. I really poured my heart and soul into making it as wonderful as possible and it was honestly one of the best days of my life.
The festival was such a huge success and I left feeling inspired by all of the wonderful people and the ideas I heard throughout the day.
Since desire to follow my passions even more intensely was recently brought into focus after running the Toronto Marathon.
I was staying with my friend Gregg who ran the marathon with me, he did great finishing in 3:57. The only problem being that his heart stopped when he crossed the finish line. He had what is commonly referred to ‘sudden death’ syndrome. Thankfully emergency paramedics were on hand to save his life and he is recovering well.
I made this video about what happened to him and how he is getting on since. And today I am doing CPR training to ensure if anything like this ever happens around me I am able to help.
It was really hard to see a good friend in great physical condition come so close to death. It really puts everything into perspective.
After coming so close to death Gregg says he isn’t afraid of anything. The whole experience made me realise that we really do have to live moment to moment because you never know what is around the corner.
2015 has undoubtedly been one of the toughest years of my life but as it draws to a close I can honestly say it has been one of the most rewarding.
Recently I have been meeting people with such amazing energy and aligned ideas and I am super excited about the vegan and mindfulness and we are creating in London and beyond.
Right now my head is buzzing with ideas for futures festivals and other big collaborative projects. So if you want to chat with me about how you can get involved please email me at my shinny new email address: firstname.lastname@example.org
